Patch: How long have you lived in Palm Desert, and what drove you to get involved with the local community?

Mumm: I am a native of the Coachella Valley. Growing up in the desert, there were not many resources for people to be creative. The creative kids made their fun, art and music out in the desert. I often joke that CREATE is the place that might have kept me out of trouble as a kid.

Today, there is still a lack of resources. The Coachella Valley is underserved in the arts.

Patch: As a leader in your community, are there any achievements that you are particularly proud of?

Mumm: Doing the work in the community is its own reward. I have a few plaques on the wall, but nothing compares to building CREATE Center and seeing the impact it makes in so many lives in the community.

Patch: How have your experiences in leadership and community involvement influenced your passion for bringing people together?

Mumm: I really enjoy bringing people together for a common cause. Being in the Leadership Coachella Valley class was inspiring, and hosting the Young Women Leaders program through WLF at CREATE Center was an honor.

The Love Across the USA community crochet mural was one of the coolest public art projects CREATE has produced. Over 40 community members came together to crochet a mural of Minerva Hamilton Hoyt who helped protect Joshua Tree.

Patch: What's one thing you wish others knew about the resources and programs available to them in Palm Desert?

Mumm: Many people judge themselves as not being good enough to be an artist. I think the biggest thing I want people to know is that it’s about enjoying what you do. Everyone starts somewhere, and it is more about the journey than the outcome. If you love what you do, and enjoy doing it, you will get better.

Patch: What do you love most about being a part of the Palm Desert community?

Mumm: I love that our community is so supportive. People really want to help make a difference.

Patch: Is there anything else you'd like Patch readers to know about the CREATE Center?

Mumm: CREATE Center is in the process of planning for our new location. It is a very exciting project that will allow us to greatly expand our services and reach.
