Deputy-Involved Shooting In Palm Desert: Wounded Woman Charged

PALM DESERT, CA — More details were released Tuesday regarding a deputy-involved shooting over the weekend in Palm Desert that left a 53-year-old woman hospitalized.

The wounded suspect was identified by the Riverside County Sheriff's Department as Kelly Lynette Cronn of Palm Desert, who was shot by a deputy following an incident in the 49000 block of state Highway 74.

Deputies were called to a residence at about 2:45 a.m. Sunday regarding a report of a burglary in progress, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department. The caller was hiding in a bedroom but could hear someone inside the home.

When deputies arrived at the residence and made their way through an unlocked door, they detained one person, but a second suspect appeared from a back room allegedly armed with a knife.

Deputies gave commands to drop the weapon, but the suspect refused, and a shooting occurred, according to the department.

"Deputies provided medical aid, and the suspect was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The other detained subject was transported to the station, interviewed, and later released," sheriff's officials said.

No additional injuries were reported.

The wounded suspect, now identified as Cronn, was charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer and is currently in custody and recovering from her injuries at the Riverside University Health Systems Detention Care Unit, according to the sheriff's department.

The deputy involved in the shooting will be placed on paid administrative leave according to department policy. Investigators from the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office assigned to the Riverside Sheriff’s Force Investigations Detail will lead an investigation into the incident.
