Explosive Device Ignites Trash Can In Ranch Mirage

A short stretch of Highway 111 between Peterson Road and Country Club Drive was closed for several hours for the investigation.

RANCHO MIRAGE, CA — An explosive device placed in a trash can in Rancho Mirage prompted an investigation from local and federal law enforcement agencies, sheriff's officials said Sunday.

The device was found after an explosion was reported at about 12:30 a.m. Saturday in the 70200 block of Highway 111, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

The sheriff's hazardous response team, along with officials from the Federal Bureau of Investigations and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, responded to the scene and determined that the explosive device had caused the trash can it was in to catch fire, sheriff's Sgt. Steve Davis said.
