Family YMCA of the Desert Offers Training Tips for 'Y Be Fit Palm Desert Challenge'
The third, annual Y Be Fit Palm Desert Challenge will be held Sunday, Oct. 2.

Family YMCA of the Desert’s third, annual Y Be Fit Palm Desert Challenge is Sunday, Oct. 2, and registered participants have started training. While individuals, families and teams of friends or co-workers are invited to participate – including all ages and skill levels from enthusiasts to competitive athletes – those committed to the Reverse Mini-Triathlon begin preparing for the event several weeks prior. Even with the temperatures in the 100s, there are still opportunities to conditionwhile considering a few tips. In addition, there is a six-week suggested training schedule available from the YMCA.
Because of the desert climate, training for the swim portion of the triathlon is an excellent option to focus on now. Palm Desert Aquatic Center, where the 300 meter portion of the Mini-Triathlon takes place, can be used for training while also familiarizing participants with the pool. Freestyle is the best stroke to practice because it is most efficient for moving through the water quickly. Form can be a common hurdle so incorporating a variety of drills into training is beneficial. Sidekicks work on rotating the body, one arm stroke and catch-up drills single out and correct form for each arm, laps with a buoy between the legs focuses on arm strength and endurance and holding onto a kickboard improves kick and leg strength.

For bike training even short distances in the early hours of the morning can be a great training exercise. To assist in conserving energy biking, tires should be checked for adequate air and pedal clips can aid in speed. Training sessions can include leaning into the bike to practice becoming one with it. Being lower and keeping elbows by sides (not bowed out) also delivers more speed. This triathlon features fairly level ground terrain, so it is not necessary to train on hills.
To prepare for the run portion, consider small runs building up to longer to increase stamina and durability. As conditioning progresses, add time and incorporate sprints into the routine. Combining the running, biking and swimming training into one session during the overall training schedule conditions muscles, preparing them for the transition phases of the Reverse Mini-Triathlon.
