Fatal I-10 Christmas Eve Crash In Coachella Valley: Driver Charged

Giovanny Michel Solis Rivero, 27, was charged with DUI gross vehicular manslaughter following the death of his female passenger.

COACHELLA VALLEY, CA — A 27-year-old man suspected of driving under the influence and crashing into the guard rail on Interstate 10, killing the female passenger in his vehicle, was charged Thursday with DUI gross vehicular manslaughter.

Giovanny Michel Solis Rivero is set to be arraigned on the charge Thursday afternoon at the Larson Justice Center in Indio.

The crash was reported at 2:05 a.m. Sunday involving a silver Toyota Camry that was found facing west, just under the Jefferson and Indio boulevards overpass, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The driver was traveling westbound on Interstate 10 in Indio when he made an unsafe turn to the right and hit the guard rail, according to CHP public information officer David Torres. The crash caused fatal injuries to the passenger.

The passenger was identified by the Riverside County coroner's office as 35-year-old Teresa Herrera of Desert Hot Springs. She was pronounced dead at 2:20 a.m.

Rivero remains held at the John J. Benoit Detention Center in Indio on $75,000 bail.
