Hazmat Incident Clears Out Bobby Duke Middle School in Coachella

According to KESQ, 18 people were taken to a hospital as a precaution.

COACHELLA, CA—Twenty-four classrooms at Bobby Duke Middle School in Coachella were cordoned off Wednesday following a chemical leak that sickened some, according to Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department.

The incident was reported at 11:16 a.m. at the school located at 85358 Bagdad Avenue.

Once on scene, firefighters evaluated students and faculty. According to KESQ, 18 people were taken to a hospital as a precaution.

Gas was turned off at the campus. A hazardous materials team was unable to detect any leaks, and the incident was turned over to Southern California Gas Company, according to the KESQ report.

It's not clear what the chemical was.
