LA QUINTA, CA — John Elway's agent, Jeffrey Sperbeck, died from hitting his head on the pavement when he fell from a golf cart at the La Quinta Golf Club last month, authorities announced Friday.

The official cause of death released by the Riverside County Coroner's Office on Friday is "blunt head trauma."

Sperbeck of San Clemente was 62 when he died after succumbing to the injury on April 30, two days after the accident.

"The manner of death is 'accident,' and the mode of death (how the injury occurred) is 'passenger fell from golf cart,'" the Riverside County Sheriff's Department wrote in a statement.

The determination ends an investigation that began almost two weeks ago.

In the days following Sperbeck's death, authorities maintained that they didn't believe there was any foul play involved.

"At this point, there is nothing to indicate that this is anything more than a tragic accident," the department posted to X last week.

Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco told The Denver Post last week that medical personnel at the scene did not find any evidence that Elway was intoxicated while driving the golf cart.

"I am absolutely devastated and heartbroken by the passing of my close friend, business partner and agent Jeff Sperbeck," Elway said in a statement, according to ESPN. "There are no words to truly express the profound sadness I feel with the sudden loss of someone who has meant so much to me.

According to published reports, Sperbeck was riding as a passenger in a golf cart driven by Elway around 7 p.m. on April 28 in the 53000 block of Humboldt Boulevard.

The two longtime friends and business partners had reportedly been taking part in festivities tied to the nearby music festival at the Empire Polo Club in Indio.

Sperbeck is believed to have fallen from the rear of the moving cart, striking his head. The vehicle’s speed at the time has not been confirmed.

He was transported to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, where he remained in a coma until his death in the early hours of April 30.
Elway was interviewed by sheriff’s deputies but was not taken into custody.
