Leads Sought After Hit-And-Run Driver Leaves Bicyclist To Die

The fatality was reported at approximately 11:25 p.m. ​Thursday on Grapefruit Boulevard, north of Palm Street​, in Thermal.

INDIO, CA — A 54-year-old bicyclist died after being struck Thursday night in Thermal by a hit-and-run driver, and leads are sought in the case.

The fatality was reported at approximately 11:25 p.m. on Grapefruit Boulevard, north of Palm Street.

An unknown vehicle traveling southbound on Grapefruit Boulevard hit the Coachella man who was also heading south, according to the California Highway Patrol.

"The unknown vehicle fled the scene of the crash, leaving the bicyclist in the roadway," the CHP reported.

A second vehicle hit the bicyclist. That driver stopped and called 911 to report the incident, the CHP said.

The victim's identity was not released pending notification of next of kin.

The CHP is searching for the first vehicle involved in the crash. Anyone with information is asked to call CHP Officer Windsor at 760-772-5300.
