Living Desert Zoo Butterfly Exhibit to Close Indefinitely

From The Living Desert Zoo: The Living Desert Zoo and Garden’s Butterflies: Winged Wonders exhibit will close indefinitely Sunday, April 30. This is the last chance for guests to experience the free-flying, colorful spectacle, which will be replaced by a new and different interactive exhibit in the fall. Camel rides are also taking a hiatus this summer and will return in the fall.

The Butterflies: Winged Wonders exhibit showcases over 300 butterflies from more than 30 unique species. The interactive exhibit illustrates metamorphosis from egg to butterfly. Guests are able get up close and personal with the butterflies and observe such species as the Luna Moth, Giant Swallowtail, Monarch, Zebra Longwing and more in a 2,500 square foot habitat built specially for this exhibit.

“The butterfly exhibit is a temporary exhibition that allows guests up-close and personal interactions with the beauty of butterflies, while also helping to inform guests about the plight of butterflies, including the Monarch,” said Allen Monroe, President and CEO of The Living Desert. “The exhibit was very popular and we know our guests will feel equally as thrilled with the lorikeet exhibit taking its place in the fall.”

The butterfly exhibit is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. through April 30, and admission is $3 for non-members and $2 for members.

While camels are on exhibit at The Living Desert throughout the year, three additional camels joined the pack to give rides as one of the zoo’s biggest attractions. These nomadic, legendary animals have a characteristic rocking gait (walk) unlike any other animal.

Camel rides are offered daily to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through April 30. Participants must be at least three years old to ride. The cost is $5 per person.
