Magnitude 4.0 Earthquake Rocks SoCal Desert

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

IMPERIAL COUNTY, CA — Two earthquakes shook the Southern California low desert overnight, the U.S. Geological Society reported.

The first temblor, a magnitude 4.0, hit at 11:54 p.m. Tuesday near Westmoreland. A second quake, measuring a magnitude 2.6, followed 2 minutes later in the area.

The sparsely populated region is on the southeastern tip of the Salton Sea, in Imperial Valley.
