As is tradition at graduation ceremonies, speeches dominated the desert event.
"I stand here not only as your president, but also as a proud community college graduate," COD Superintendent/President Val Martinez Garcia told graduates. "So, I don’t just understand the significance of today — I’ve lived the impact it will have on you and your family for years to come."

From the podium, student speaker Angelica Andrade shared her personal experience, too. She was a teenage mother who obtained her GED and eventually pursued a career in education. More than 20 years later, she earned her degree in sociology and psychology, graduating in the same class as her son.
"I am driven by the belief that education is a tool for empowerment. It’s not just about academics, it’s about helping others find their own strength, overcome their obstacles, and unlock their potential," Andrade told graduates.
The presentation of the Faculty of the Year award to COD's Dr. Giuseppe Vezzoli was equally purposeful during the graduation ceremony.
"This award is for you, Roadrunners," Giuseppe said upon his acceptance. "Particularly, I want to
dedicate this award to the undocumented, disabled, and transgender students. I want you to know that you are seen, you are loved, and you are an essential part of this community, this beautiful mosaic."
College of the Desert was founded in 1958. The main campus is located at 43500 Monterey Avenue in Palm Desert, though the college has satellite locations across the Coachella Valley.
