Palm Desert Aquatic Center Celebrates Fourth of July with Swim, Fireworks

Recreational swim opens at 11 a.m., followed by the spectacular Desert Civic Center Fireworks Show after dusk.

Palm Desert Aquatic Center (PDAC) kicks off the fourth of July with recreational swim open at 11 a.m. until dusk for the use of pools, water play areas, slides and diving boards, followed by the spectacular Palm Desert Civic Center Fireworks Show. Swim lessons and fitness classes are also available in July, and the facility offers birthday party space and cabana rentals.

Pool-goers on July 4 can stay for the exciting fireworks show with perfect views of the fireworks display and colorful night sky right from the pool deck, which includes lounge chairs and grassy areas. In addition, a special barbecue from noon to 6 p.m. features July 4 favorites including hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, drinks, ice cream and snacks. In addition, the snack bar concessions will stay open until 9 p.m. Aquatic Center visitors are encouraged to arrive early for parking lot access as Magnesia Falls Drive will close at 4 p.m. and reopen after the fireworks. Those coming after 4 p.m. can park on Magnesia Falls Drive east of Portola Avenue as well as at Magnesia Falls Park. Parking at the neighboring Civic Center is open until 6 p.m. with access from Fred Waring Dr.

During the hot month of July, PDAC is a perfect option for outdoor exercise. In addition to group swim lessons taught by trained swim instructors, there are water exercise classes and lap swimming hours. Swim lesson sign-ups are open for July 11–21 and July 25–Aug. 4 as well as Aug. 8–18. There are eight lessons per session running Monday through Thursday with morning or evening options. From beginners learning water-smart and pool-safe techniques with water basics and fundamental swimming skills, up to more advanced swimmers working on swim stroke development, the cost is $60 for Palm Desert residents and $80 for non-residents for the eight sessions. Private swim lessons are also offered. Lap swimming is open daily with varying hours.

For a more structured fitness option, there are water exercise classes, including Shallow Water Exercise, Deep Water Boot Camp and a Basic Arthritis and Injury Rehab. The drop-in rate for the water classes are $6 for residents and $8 for non-residents, or a monthly pass is $65 for residents and $85 for non-residents. PDAC has debuted Restorative Yoga classes, which take place indoors, adding to the Chair Yoga classes that are held Fridays at 10 a.m. Restorative Yoga is on Tuesday at 10 a.m. and Thursday at 6 p.m. Restorative Yoga costs $15 for drop-in or $99 for ten classes, and Chair Yoga is $6 for Palm Desert Residents or $8 for non-residents per class. Personal fitness training incorporating swim is available as well.

Summer is also a time for aquatic-themed birthday parties, and PDAC offers an air-conditioned and furnished multi-use room and private shaded cabana space on the pool deck for rent. The cost to rent the multi-purpose room is $75 per hour for residents and $100 per hour for non-residents. Guests can bring their own decorations and food while using the recreational swim areas including water play, slides and diving board. The cabanas offer private space on the pool deck and rent for $60 for four hours from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. or from 3-7 p.m. or $120 for a full day from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. No outside food or drink is allowed on the pool deck for cabana rentals, but there is a concessions stand.

Admission to recreational swim at PDAC ranges from just $2.50 to $6, depending on age and residency. On July 4, the admission fee also includes the fireworks show. The barbecue costs between $3 and $7, depending on what is ordered. The Palm Desert Aquatic Center is located at 73751 Magnesia Falls Dr. in Palm Desert behind Civic Center Park. While all pools are monitored at all times by trained lifeguards, children 6 years and younger will need to be accompanied at all times by an adult and must have an adult in the water if they are not swimmers.
