Palm Springs Issues New Mask Mandates

Each hotel, motel, vacation rental and timeshare must now post signage reminding guests to wear face coverings and maintain social distance.

PALM SPRINGS, CA — On Wednesday, the City of Palm Springs stepped up its order requiring face masks in compliance with Gov. Gavin Newsom's requirement for stricter guidelines across California.

The new mandate in Palm Springs strengthens mask requirements when outdoors and near businesses, in fitness centers and when dining or picking up food from a restaurant. Residents are also urged to keep a mask on hand for use whenever social distance isn't possible.

In a release, the City of Palm Springs said masks are now required for anyone who is standing, walking, hiking, biking or running on a sidewalk adjacent to a business establishment.

Masks are also required or anyone inside a fitness center, gym, yoga studio, dance studio or similar establishment, even while exercising.

The mandate further requires that patrons picking up food or dining inside a restaurant wear a mask any time a restaurant employee approaches a patron at a table or bar, but not while eating.

The mandate also reminds residents to continue practicing social distancing whenever in public.

In a release, the city acknowledges that some people with documentation are unable to wear face masks because of limitations caused by health conditions. The city now mandates that anyone exempt from wearing a face mask instead wears a protective face shield.

Lastly, the mandate requires that each hotel, motel, vacation rental or timeshare in Palm Springs post signage reminding its patrons to practice social distancing and wear masks as required by the city.

Palm Springs requires that the signage be posted in a conspicuous location at every entrance and exit, as well as on or next to the main interior door. Violations could result in fines or the revocation of a business license, the city said.
