RivCo Residents With Hilary Storm Damage Can Apply For Tax Relief

The following is a news release from the office of Riverside County 4th District Supervisor V. Manuel Perez:

RIVERSIDE COUNTY, CA — Owners of properties that incurred damage of $10,000 or more from Hurricane Hilary can file a claim with Riverside County for disaster property tax relief.

The disaster relief covers taxable property such as residences, commercial buildings, boats, aircraft, and business personal property that is locally assessed. When major calamities such as fires or floods damage or destroy property, the owner may be eligible for property tax relief. In such cases, the Assessor’s office will reappraise the property to reflect its damaged condition.

When the property is rebuilt in a like or similar manner, the property will retain its previous value for tax purposes.

The Riverside County Assessor-County Clerk-Recorder’s office posted information about the disaster relief program online at www.rivcoacr.org/disaster-relief and mailed Application for Reassessment claim forms to homeowners the office identified as being impacted by the storm. If you were impacted but did not receive a claim form, please contact the Assessor’s office.

To qualify for property tax relief, the owner must file the Application for Reassessment with the county Assessor’s office within 12 months from the date the property was damaged or destroyed.

“Hurricane Hilary, which hit Riverside County August 20, is the most costly natural disaster in our county’s history and most of the damage was in the Coachella Valley,” said Supervisor Perez. “This program can provide relief to the hardship that people are going through as they look to rebuild from significant damage.”
