Scooter Rider Hit By Minivan In Rancho Mirage

RANCHO MIRAGE, CA — A motorized scooter rider turning left against a red light in Rancho Mirage was severely injured Tuesday when she was hit by a minivan, authorities said.

Officers responded around 1 p.m. to the intersection of Highway 111 and Library Way and determined that a female scooter rider "was struck by a Nissan minivan, causing the rider to be thrown off the scooter," according to the Rancho Mirage Police Department. "The scooter was then struck a second time by a Toyota SUV."

It is not clear if the rider was hit a second time.

A preliminary investigation determined that the unidentified rider was traveling eastbound on Highway 111 and turned left onto Library Way against a red signal, authorities said. They also confirmed she was wearing a helmet at the time of collision.

The scooter rider was taken to a hospital with severe, but non-life threatening injuries, and was in stable condition, authorities said.

No other injuries were reported.

The drivers of both the minivan and SUV stayed on scene and were cooperative with officers, authorities said.

Officers determined that alcohol was not a factor in the collision.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.

Authorities asked that anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to call Officer Bazanos from the Rancho Mirage Police Department's Traffic Team at (760) 836-1600.
