Themes range from sweet to erotic, harmless angst to a juxtaposition of domestic abuse and even the complexities of dealing with suicide. The play features a Grammy-winning score written by Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater. The score leans heavily into alternative rock, which, combined with the setting and costumes, creates a dichotomy between setting and sound.
"Director Trevor Biship-Gillespie's production fully embraces the RSC's desire to shake things up," said producing artistic director Gary Powers over Facebook. "The show is profound, moving, and shall I say it? Revolutionary!"
