Deputies found the 46-year-old victim Sunday afternoon suffering from a gunshot wound and transported him to a hospital, where he died.

A Stockton man was shot and fatally wounded in Palm Desert, a Riverside County sheriff's sergeant said Monday.

The shooting was reported at about 3 p.m. Sunday near Washington Street and Country Club Drive, said Sgt. Jim Erickson of the Riverside County sheriff's Central Homicide Unit.

"Upon arrival deputies located a 46-year-old Hispanic male later identified as Michael Anthony Gomez suffering from a gunshot wound,'' Erickson said. Gomez was transported to a hospital where he died.

"This is an active homicide investigation and no further details will be released at this time,'' he said.

Anyone with further information was urged to contact Investigator R. Wortman at the Central Homicide Unit at (760) 393-3500.
