'Undocumented Action Week' Recognized Across CA Community Colleges
Campuses across the state have joined the Community College's Chancellor's Office for a week of advocating for undocumented students.
RIVERSIDE COUNTY, CA — College of the Desert in Palm Desert is hosting a week of activities and informational sessions for Undocumented Action Week, which is taking place October 14 through 18. Mt. San Jacinto College is also holding events to foster awareness and support for policies that enhance the success of undocumented students.
The Riverside County campuses are not alone.
The 8th annual California Community Colleges Undocumented Student Action Week is underway. Campuses across the state have joined the California Community College's Chancellor’s Office for a week of advocating for undocumented students.

At College of the Desert, each event this week was designed by the campus's Dreamer Resource Center. Each day features one to two activities or sessions designed to connect attendees with information about scholarship opportunities, how to attain an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number and California ID, and more. Attendees are also invited to unwind at a bracelet crafting time, yoga session, and breakfast. The week will wrap up with a picnic with free carne asada tacos and entertainment.
"At our core, we believe that everyone has a right to pursue their academic and career goals," said Amanda Phillips, COD Dean of Counseling. "Undocumented Action Week is a fun and effective way to engage our AB 540 students and connect them with resources that are designed to help them succeed in college."

California's Assembly Bill 540 was signed into law by Governor Gray Davis on October 12, 2001, allowing access to in-state tuition rates for undocumented and other eligible students at California's public colleges and universities.
MSJC said it is committed to promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. The college said it actively works to eliminate barriers to higher education for undocumented students, ensuring they feel welcomed and supported on their educational journeys toward financial stability.
The Center for American Progress reports that the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program recipients alone are projected to contribute over $460 billion to the U.S. economy this decade, highlighting the vital role these students play in our society, according to MSJC.
