Remnants of a tropical storm called "Ivo" could bring showers and more thunderstorms to the Coachella Valley beginning this weekend, and forecasters warn of potential for lightning and flash flooding in the mountains, which include more than 75 square miles scorched by the Silver, Mountain and Hathaway fires.
The following is an advisory from the National Weather Service:
Moisture associated with T.S. Ivo will surge north over Baja California the next few days and reach southern California this weekend. This will lead to scattered showers and thunderstorms Sunday through Monday. Residual moisture will continue the threat of afternoon and evening thunderstorms over the mountains and deserts through next Thursday. Thunderstorms that develop can produce brief heavy rainfall, flash flooding, deadly lightning, and gusty winds.
A Weather Service synopsis of the approaching weather system's potential as of Friday morning included the following:
"Very warm weather will continue today through Saturday. Towering cumulus or an isolated thunderstorm will be possible over the mountains and deserts each afternoon as some moisture lingers over the region.
"The remnants of a tropical cyclone will then spread across Southern California on Sunday . . . With some showers and thunderstorms. Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are possible for Monday through Thursday over the mountains and deserts. . . . Expect warm and muggy weather to continue through the coming week."
Strong winds and dust storms will be possible in desert areas including wind-prone locations in the Pass and the Coachella Valley, forecasters advised.
