📰 Here are the top stories today in Palm Springs:
- An apartment fire in the 900 block of East Vista Chino called for the evacuation of 12 neighbors. Reportedly, there were “heavy fire and smoke from two of the enclosed garages.” Nobody was injured, but several units are no longer in any condition to live in. (KESQ)
- What’s going on with the Palm Springs campus of the College of the Desert (COD)? Neighbors wanted to know and flocked to City Hall Wednesday for a review. Insiders refer to the exchanges as “a mix of opinions peppered with a dose of reality.” Bond approval for the project dates back to 2004, and attendees liked that there was finally a design to review. However, critics pointed to possible future traffic snarls on Farrell Drive, a lack of native landscaping, and an idle building site. (The Palm Springs Post)
- There was some worry that the city council would halt the Dream Hotel project at the last minute. However, councilmembers instead “unanimously agreed to let the project move forward despite recent criticism.” They accepted revisions of the project as presented. We are now optimistic that groundbreaking will, indeed, take place late next year. (NBC)
- The Firebirds are in the running for the Calder Cup. It’s fair to say that the valley is in the throes of hockey fever. Game six sold out, and “the Firebirds set an attendance record with a crowd of 10,087.” Credit the location of the Acrisure Arena and the billing of the team as the Coachella Valley Firebirds. (Desert Sun)
- It’s time to celebrate the 125th Anniversary of Philippine Independence and Nationhood, and the location is DeMuth Park this Sunday! A caravan starts bright and early at 8 a.m. under the leadership of Manny the Movie Guy. Later, the YMCA of the Desert will serve food, drinks, host games, and so much more! (NBC)
