📰 Here are the top stories in Palm Springs today:

  1. A 31-year-old man is suspected of driving under the influence Tuesday, crashing into a sand berm behind road closure barriers, and injuring his child in the process. The crash happened around 2 a.m. on N. Indian Canyon Drive. This man was arrested “on suspicion of driving under the influence and child endangerment.” A second vehicle, driven by an 18-year-old man, also crashed. His car burst into flames, but he was rescued. He’ll likely be charged with “driving under the influence.” (NBC, Patch)
  2. What caused the West fire near Banning on Tuesday? Firefighters achieved full containment on Wednesday morning after receiving reports Tuesday evening of the blaze at Westward and Sunset avenues. Reportedly, they found “three spots of vegetation burning in light flashy fuels.” Investigators are now working to determine the case. (Patch)
  3. If you’ve been looking forward to shopping at a renovated Indio Fashion Mall, you’ll be in for disappointment. The site’s owner, Haagen Company, informed officials that it won’t redevelop the venue “in its enclosed mall format.” You may remember that the plans for the work were approved in 2021 and the mall was supposed to reopen in 2022. We have no word on what’ll happen next. (KESQ)
  4. Several educators are criticizing the Ruth Hardy Park event the Palm Springs Unified School District hosted on March 4. Attendees were “more than 250 Central Office and Service Center staff.” Now, teachers, who weren’t invited, complain about the expense. However, the Community Outreach Coordinator went on record explaining that the cost for the event was covered by the Superintendent’s budget and the event benefited “staff members who are frequently unrecognized and sometimes unappreciated.” (Uken Report)
  5. Lovers of cute animals should head to The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens. Three Chacoan peccaries were born and are adorable. Born on May 9, they’ve joined their parents in the Zoo’s Eagle Canyon area. See them before they get bigger! (NBC)
