📰 Here are the top stories in Palm Springs today:
- Someone’s stealing pool pumps and heaters, and the Police Department has a couple of suspects. They’re described as two male Hispanics driving a Ford Ranger pickup truck. Because theft of pool equipment has been skyrocketing, the Department suggests installing “anti-theft cages, video surveillance cameras, and GPS tracking devices.” If you do have your equipment stolen, please report it to officers promptly. (Palm Springs Police Department)
- The good news is that officials received no new reports of mpox cases. The bad news is that the local wastewater shows “the presence of mpox for the first time in months.” The last official new case dates back to Jan. 9. What does this mean? If you’re at risk of getting infected, make getting the mpox vaccine a priority – now. (NBC)
- The Police Department will participate in the enforcement of the “Click It or Ticket” campaign. The campaign runs from Monday to June 4. Additional officers will be on the roads, looking for drivers who aren’t wearing seat belts or neglecting to secure children in appropriate safety seats. If you need a refresher on the subject, remember that a youngster has to be “secured in a safety or booster seat until they are at least 8 years old or at least 4 feet, 9 inches tall. Children under the age of 2 must ride in a rear-facing seat unless the child weighs 40 or more pounds or is 40 or more inches tall.” (Palm Springs Police Department)
- Unhoused neighbors can turn to the Palm Springs Access Center for overnight shelter beginning June 1. The facility is located across from the airport at 225 El Cielo Road and partners with Martha’s Village and Kitchen to protect individuals from heat-related problems. Program participants receive “free dinner, breakfast, and hygiene items” along with one of 20 available beds beginning at 4:30 p.m. (City of Palm Springs)
- It’s time for the next Desert Art Center’s High School Art Show. Come to the reception on May 26 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. to meet the Palm Springs Unified School District artists. Artwork is on display from 10 a.m. to May 28 at 4 p.m. Do not miss the opportunity to see some local artists’ careers being launched. (Desert Art Center)
