Here are the top three stories in Palm Springs today:

  1. After a couple of windy days, temperatures are expected to reach and then rush past 90 degrees for the first time this year later this week. A high of 87 degrees is expected Friday, and then temperatures are expected to break 90 degrees across the Coachella Valley on Sunday into Monday. It is still too early to predict when the hot wave will end, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Brian Adam, but it appears that temperatures will remain above average at least into the middle of next week. 2. During a DUI checkpoint on Saturday in nearby Palm Desert, 14 drivers were issued tickets, and two persons were taken into custody. Dennis Siggins, 26, of Wildomar was detained for allegedly driving under the influence of drugs. Palm Springs resident Meliton Mejia, 34, was also detained for allegedly operating a vehicle while intoxicated. According to the sheriff’s department, a total of 890 vehicles were inspected with one person cited for driving on a suspended license and 13 people cited for driving unlicensed. (Patch)
  3. A plea agreement was reached for two men who shot and injured two other men at a gas station down the road in Indio in 2018. Indio local Martin Daydi Chapa, 42, and Daniel Ceja Lua, 34, of Mecca pleaded guilty to one felony count each of attempted murder and assault with a gun from the Nov. 27, 2018, shooting at the Jefferson St. ARCO am/pm. According to a court spokesman, both have received sentences of 15 years in state prison. An alleged disagreement between Lua and his girlfriend's ex-boyfriend was cited as the case's driving force. Capa and Lua opened fire at the station where the ex-boyfriend was located. (KESQ)
