Cubberley Concept Plan Paused By Palo Alto City Council

PALO ALTO, CA — The Palo Alto City Council voted unanimously at a council meeting Monday to pause the Cubberley Concept Plan, a proposal for the future development of the Cubberley Community Center site.

The council requested a joint meeting with the Palo Alto Unified School District Board before June. It also considered exploring a land swap at Fletcher Middle School.

The concept plan called for an updated community center and a future school on a 43-acre joint-use site between the city and school district. Currently, the 35-acre Cubberley site is the last and largest parcel of publicly-owned land in Palo Alto that has potential to be redeveloped for community benefit, according to the city.

The current Cubberley Community Center opened in 1990, after Cubberley High School closed in 1979. A new concept plan was developed after the city recognized that the buildings are “coming to the end of their useful life,”according to a staff report.
