Green Foothills Celebrates Among the Redwoods in Saratoga
Hundreds will gather to mark change in leadership and to honor achievements protecting environment in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties

Green Foothills, a local environmental organization that has been instrumental in preserving many of the Peninsula and South Bay’s most cherished parks and natural wonders, will hold a celebration in honor of the California redwood on Sunday, September 24, 2023 from 10:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. The party is called Nature’s Inspiration, and hundreds of people are expected to turn out for entertainment and refreshments.
This event, which takes place in a redwood grove at Sanborn County Park in Saratoga, includes special guests Julie Dominguez of the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe of the San Francisco Bay; Corina Herrera-Loera and Gerardo Ixteyo Loera of Calpulli Tonalehqueh; Sara Barth of the Sempervirens Fund, a Green Foothills partner; a live performance by the Kathak Kala Vihar dance troupe; and a surprise guest. The event program will honor Green Foothills’ outgoing Executive Director, Megan Fluke; welcome Julie Hutcheson as incoming Executive Director; and celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Green Foothills Leadership Program, which trains local residents to advocate for conservation and environmental justice.
Green Foothills, which has been a voice for local nature since 1962, was instrumental in winning funding for the Santa Clara and San Mateo County parks departments and in founding the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District. Over the years it successfully fought to prevent now-unthinkable projects such as a freeway on Skyline Blvd. in the Santa Cruz Mountains, and defeated plans to pave over the San Francisco Bay. Most recently it led the successful campaign to preserve the 7,000+ acre Coyote Valley south of San Jose.
