Palo Alto City Council Issues Statement Of Solidarity With Buffalo

The council held a moment of silence at its meeting Monday for the victims of police said was a racially-motivated shooting on Saturday.

PALO ALTO, CA — The Palo Alto City Council stood in solidarity with the city of Buffalo, New York in the wake of a mass shooting Saturday at a market that killed 10 people, which police claimed was racially motivated.

The council released a statement Monday denouncing racist hate and held a moment of silence at its council meeting. The meeting was also adjourned in honor of the victims.

Investigators believed the suspect targeted the predominantly Black neighborhood. Eleven of the 13 victims were Black.

“We stand together with Buffalo in solidarity and support during this tragic time,” Palo Alto Mayor Pat Burt said in a statement. “We mourn with the families and friends of those impacted by this horrible event. As a community and as a country, we can stand together against racist hate, and encourage acts of kindness and belonging. This tragedy must serve for us all to rededicate ourselves to ending hate crimes everywhere. Our communities and our nation are strengthened by our diversity, and we must speak out and act against all hate crimes such as the horrific act of violence in Buffalo.”
