'Best Place to See a Miniature World'? Try Abalone Cove
L.A. Weekly recognizes the tiny ecosystems in Abalone Cove's tide pools as one of the best spots in Los Angeles.
Abalone Cove's tide pools are impressive. So impressive, in fact, that L.A. Weekly recently named the spot the "Best place to see a miniature world" in the magazine's annual Best of Los Angeles feature.
"Depending on what the tide is doing (be sure to check, because high tide is considerably less exciting), you'll see purple sea urchins, starfish, hermit crabs, nudibranchs, sea snails, sea hares, mussels and clams," according to the magazine. "Try not to squash them as you go along—it's an ecological reserve."
The tide pools are located within Abalone Cove Shoreline Park, which also includes a beach and several trails, according to the city of Rancho Palos Verdes, which maintains the park.
Right now, the park is open from noon until 4 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends and holidays.
Abalone Cove Shoreline Park is located at 5970 Palos Verdes Drive South in Rancho Palos Verdes.
