The religious holiday consists of 29 days of daily fasting.
Ramadan, Muslims believe, was the month in which the Islamic prophet, Muhammad, received the first verses of the Quran.

During the month of Ramadan, Muslims focus on their spirituality, in addition to fasting from dawn to sunset.
"You start thinking about your life, where you are with your religion. It’s a time to remember the year past and get in touch with your spiritual side," Saman Namazikhah of the Iranian-American Muslim Association of North America .
