Rancho Palos Verdes Cancels Municipal Election

With two open seats and only two incumbent candidates, the City Council appointed John Cruikshank and Eric Alegria to take office.

RANCHO PALOS VERDES, CA — Rancho Palos Verdes City Council made the decision Thursday night to cancel the Nov. 3 municipal election and voted to appoint the incumbent candidates who were running unopposed—a move expected to save more than $100,000.

With two open seats and only two incumbent candidates, the City Council appointed incumbents Mayor John Cruikshank and Mayor Pro Tem Eric Alegria to take office Thursday night.

The nomination period began on July 13 and ended Aug. 7 with only the two candidates nominated for the two open seats. The council was authorized to appoint Cruikshank and Alegria due to an election code that allows nominees to be appointed as if they are running unopposed during a municipal election.

"This appointment also causes the previously scheduled election to be canceled and yields an approximate savings of over $100K to the City's budget," the city said in a news release. "The City Clerk has also been directed to not accept for filing any statement of a write in candidate which is submitted after the appointments are made."

Patch reached out to Rancho Palos Verdes city clerk for more information about the election cancelation.
