RPV Teen Named Finalist in National Science Challenge

Braeden Benedict, 14, is one of 10 national finalists in the 3M Young Scientist Challenge. He'll travel to Minnesota in the fall to present his work to judges.

A Rancho Palos Verdes teen will head to Minnesota this fall to show off his science skills as one of 10 finalists in the 13th Annual Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge.

Braeden Benedict, 14, will compete against nine other middle-schoolers in St. Paul. He submitted an entry video on concussion detection. View Benedict's entry video here.

The Young Scientist Challenge is a national science competition for students in grades 5 through 8.

Benedict will now be challenged to create an innovation that solves a problem he has identified in everyday life. He will work with a mentor to develop his idea from a theoretical concept into an actual prototype, which he will present at the competition's final event at the 3M Innovation Center in St. Paul, according to a Young Scientist Challenge press release.

The winner will receive $25,000, a trip from Discovery Student Adventures and the title of "America's Top Young Scientist."
