Should Teens Be Banned From Tanning Beds?

Even with the summer sun beating down on SoCal residents, some teens still head to tanning beds for an enhanced glow. But are they aware of the risks?

Lawmakers in more than 20 states have debated bills this year to ban or restrict tanning bed use by minors.

A bill was previously authored by state (D-Torrance) that from using indoor tanning beds.

The Senate approved the measure on June 1 by a vote of 24-9.

"There is no such thing as a safe tan," the Food and Drug Administration says.

Exposure to UV radiation, whether from the sun or a tanning bed, can cause skin cancer, burns, premature skin aging and eye damage. Approximately 30 million Americans visit tanning salons every year, and 2.3 million of those are teens, the FDA says.
