Today Could be Hottest Day of the Year in Region
Temperatures of 100 degrees are expected across much of the region today. We'll tell you how to stay safe during a heat wave.

While Palos Verdes might not see temperatures hit 100 degrees, much of the region today will see the highest temperatures of the year, up to 109 degrees in some areas, according to the National Weather Service.
"Some stations may have been hotter earlier in the year but overall (today) will be the hottest it's been this year," said meteorologist Ryan Kittell with the National Weather Service (NWS).
Parts of the San Fernando Valley could see temps of 105 degrees, and 109 degrees in the Antelope Valley, according to the NWS.

The NWS reported the heat wave, which started Tuesday, could continue through early next week.
The NWS forecast highs today of 73 degrees in Avalon and Newport Beach; 74 at LAX; 87 in Long Beach; 89 in downtown L.A.; 92 in Anaheim; 93 on Mount Wilson and in San Gabriel; 95 in Burbank; 96 in Pasadena; 103 in Woodland Hills; 105 in Newhall; and 106 in both Palmdale and Lancaster. Friday's highs will be similar and a cooling trend will begin Saturday.

In Palos Verdes, highs are expected in the upper 80s for today and Friday, then drops are expected to the lower 80s for the weekend and Monday. Tuesday and Wednesday highs are forecasted around 78 degrees, according to the NWS.
How to stay safe
On average, more than 1,500 people in the U.S. die each year from excessive heat, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. The sheriff's department issued tips for staying safe during periods of excessive heat:
- Reduce strenuous activities and slow down.
- Dress in lightweight, light-colored clothing.
- Drink plenty of water and stay away from alcoholic beverages.
- Spend time in air-conditioned places and protect against sunburns.
- Never leave anyone, especially children or pets in closed, parked vehicles.
