📰 News we're reading

1. Free Health Screenings at Hastings Ranch & La Pintoresca Branch Libraries, Dec 17 & 18 (coloradoboulevard.net) — Free health screenings for hypertension and diabetes are coming to Pasadena’s Hastings Ranch and La Pintoresca branch libraries on December 17 and 18, with no appointments needed. A Huntington Health nurse will offer counseling plus blood pressure and diabetes checks, though a short fast is required for the diabetes test. It’s a convenient way for residents to catch early warning signs and get expert guidance close to home.

2. Hockley man honored with Carnegie Medal for subduing Pasadena school shooter (click2houston.com) — A heroic intervention at a Pasadena high school band competition earlier this year has earned Hockley resident Juan F. Lopez a prestigious Carnegie Medal for Heroism. Lopez tackled and disarmed an 83-year-old gunman who had opened fire and wounded one person, preventing further injuries. Pasadena readers are directly connected to this national honor through the local school setting and the lives saved there.

3. Mighty Eagle's National Hispanic Honor Society students transformed kindness into action, honoring unsung heroes of the campus with homemade gifts and respect. (pasadenian.com) — Students in Pasadena High School’s National Hispanic Honor Society recently surprised day and night custodians with homemade tostadas and wrapped gifts, turning simple kindness into a heartfelt thank-you. Their gesture highlighted how much Pasadena’s school community depends on often-unseen staff and celebrated “Mighty Eagle Way” values of respect, gratitude, and shared excellence. It’s a small campus moment with big community spirit.

4. YIMBY Group Sues California Gov. Gavin Newson Over Duplex Ban in Neighborhoods Destroyed by Wildfires (realtor.com) — Pasadena is among the communities that used Gov. Gavin Newsom’s wildfire-related executive order to block SB 9 duplex rebuilds in high-risk fire zones, and that move is now under legal fire. A pro-housing group is suing Newsom, arguing he overstepped by letting cities curb duplexes and lot splits that many fire survivors see as key to financing their return. The case could reshape how much control local governments like Pasadena have over rebuilding in future disasters.
