Rose Bowl Game All-Century Coach, Player Announced

In commemoration of the 100th Rose Bowl Game, officials announce the All-Century Coach and All-Century Player.

Former USC football coach John McKay was announced Sunday as the Rose Bowl Game's All-Century Coach and former Ohio State running back Archie Griffin as the All-Century Player in commemoration of the 100th Rose Bowl Game.

McKay's five Rose Bowl Game coaching victories tied the record set by another Trojan coach, Howard Jones. His eight appearances as a coach tied the late Ohio State coach Woody Hayes for second behind the late Michigan coach Bo Schembechler, who made 10.

Griffin, the 1974 and 1975 Heisman Trophy winner, is one of two players to have started in four consecutive Rose Bowl Games. He ran for 149 yards and a touchdown in Ohio State's 42-21 victory over the Trojans in the 1974 Rose Bowl. The Buckeyes lost the three other Rose Bowl Games Griffin played in, two to USC and one to UCLA.

McKay, USC's coach from 1960 to 1975 when he left to become the first coach of the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers, also was chosen as the 1960s representative on the Rose Bowl Game's All-Century Class and Griffith as the 1970s member.

The All-Century Class consists of one representative from each decade. It was chosen by a committee of members of the Football Writers Association of America, who earlier selected a set of three finalists from each decade.
