2 Arrested In Brutal Downtown Petaluma Assault: Police

The incident happened around 2 a.m. New Year's Day on Kentucky Street, police said.

PETALUMA, CA — Two Santa Rosa men were arrested on suspicion of battery in connection with a brutal assault in downtown Petaluma early Tuesday as the New Year's Eve bar crowd was clearing, police officials said.

The case began when a man hit a Windsor man from behind, slamming his fist into the man's head as he stood on the sidewalk in the 100 block of Kentucky Street around 2 a.m., according to police.

The blow struck the man to the ground, and another man kicked him in the face as he lay there, punching him in the head, witnesses told police.

The initial attack was captured on video, police said.

The attackers ran to the Keller Street Parking Garage and attempted to flee in a sport utility vehicle, but were nabbed by officers, according to police.

Malik Telcy, 22, and Gregory MacDonald, also 22, wee arrested on suspicion of battery with serious bodily injury and booked into Sonoma County Jail.

The 29-year-old victim was bleeding from the mouth and face and seemed to be convulsing when the officers arrived, police said. He was taken to the hospital by the Petaluma Fire Department and treated for injuries to his face, head and teeth, police said.

Police said they don't know the reason for the attack. According to police, the attackers told them the victim started the fight, though police said this doesn't seem to be the case based on the video and witness accounts.
