24 Adorable Photos From The Cutest Little Chick Contest

Over 100 hopeful contestants ages 0-5 turned out for the Cutest Little Chick contest, held annually during Petaluma Butter & Egg Days.

PETALUMA, CA — Petaluma's Butter & Egg Day events went off without a hitch Saturday except for a few sad little chicks.

The popular Cutest Little Chicks contest, put on by the Petaluma Egg Farm before the parade starts each year, was limited to 60 entrants. However, some 130 showed up, leaving 70 little ones unable to compete in their feathery, glittery egg- and chicken-themed costumes.

"It was our biggest ever," Jeff Mayne, contest and parade announcer, told Petaluma Argus-Courier.

Although the contest is held in April, organizers get calls as early as January from parents who want to confirm a spot. Because of time restraints and other factors, organizers must limit the number of participants to 60 or 70.

Costumed contestants 0-5 years old are judged based on their poultry theme, completeness and originality. The judges also consider how each costume relates to the parade theme, which this year was "Greener Pastures: Sustaining Petaluma's Future."

As for the little ones who could not compete, they most likely forgot all about it when they saw the children's area with a petting zoo, a giant mural for coloring, a bounce house and many other fun activities.
