Career Day Ignites Passion In Next Generation Of Firefighters

PETALUMA, CA — Thirty aspiring firefighters turned out April 17 for the Petaluma Fire Department's 2nd annual Firefighters Career Day.

The fire department invited local high school juniors and seniors from Petaluma, San Antonio, Valley Oaks, San Vincent, Casa Grande, Sonoma Mountain and Carpe Diem high schools who are eager to learn about the profession, Petaluma Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief Chad Costa said.

"This unique event not only offered a hands-on introduction to the firefighting profession but also marked a significant stride in our ongoing diversity and inclusion efforts," Costa said. "By inviting a diverse group of students and providing resources at no cost, we aimed to make a career in firefighting accessible to all, encouraging a more diverse future for our community's emergency responders."

Students experienced the thrill of firefighting through equipment demos during which they donned real firefighting gear and operated authentic firefighting equipment. Realistic training exercises in forcible entry, hose handling, emergency medical service and rescue operations provided a practical glimpse into the day-to-day life of firefighters.

Students gained important life and technical skills and discovered what it takes to be a firefighter, paramedic or fire inspector. Emergency Medical Services —EMS — and fire prevention were highlighted as crucial roles within the broader fire service that provide additional pathways for those interested in this vital field.

Students also received professional guidance from experienced firefighters who shared insights about their careers and discussed essential skills like physical fitness, teamwork and technical expertise.

The event was also an opportunity to connect with professionals and like-minded peers.

"The Firefighter Career Day was a resounding success, filled with learning and excitement," Costa said. "We thank everyone who participated and contributed to making this event a beacon of hope and inspiration."
