'Creating A Kind World Starting With The Playground': Star Students
How two second-grade Petaluma students used empathy to build a strong response to the complex problem of bullying.

PETALUMA, CA — Star Students are found in classrooms, on concert and theater stages and at debate lecterns, and out in the community doing good things to make life better for all of us.
Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize Star Students, and we’re working to tell the stories of these outstanding kids to their neighbors.
This submission comes from Cynthia Schulz, a second-grade teacher in Petaluma, who nominated two of her students.

Why do you believe the star local student should be recognized?
When Violet and Scarlett were kicked off the monkey bars by an older student, they tried to problem-solve with her. They asked the student's teacher to help. They found out that the student thought differently. Instead of giving in to anger and fear, the next day they went up to her and said "Hi " and she said "Hi." She was thrilled. Scarlett and Violet then started a No Bully Club and asked her to join it. They started a Friendship Club and asked her to join. They were relentless in taking action in a novel and caring way. They researched kids who think differently, ACES, and bullying. They used empathy to build a strong response to a complex problem. They are heroes. You can look at the presentation that Violet and Scarlett did for the Sonoma County STEAM Symposium at this link.
What's one thing you want everyone to know about the star local student?
Scarlett and Violet are ordinary kids with relentless empathy. They use the Engineering Design Process to try a solution and try again. They are excellent students and great athletes but most importantly they are creating a kind world starting with the playground.
Congratulations on your achievements, and all of our best wishes to you in the future, Violet and Scarlett!
