A family science project brought police to a Petaluma neighborhood Monday after officers investigating a burglary heard explosions nearby.

PETALUMA - A family science project brought numerous police officers to a Petaluma neighborhood Monday afternoon after officers investigating an unrelated burglary heard explosions nearby.
Monday around 2:55 p.m. officers investigating a residential burglary in the vicinity of Bodega Avenue and El Paseo Drive heard what they thought were gunshots coming from a nearby residence. Additional officers also responded to the scene.
Two minors and their parent told officers they'd been experimenting with dry ice bombs for a science project.

The officers "counseled" them and released them from the scene, according to police.
Police said that dry ice bombs qualify as "destructive devices" under the California penal code.

Unexploded dry ice bombs also present a "major safety problem" for the community, according to police.
