Parolee Arrested After Attack, Handgun Violation In Petaluma: PD

The man attacked another person Friday, according to police.

PETALUMA, CA — A 32-year-old Petaluma man was arrested on Friday for allegedly assaulting someone and possessing a handgun, despite a previous conviction that barred him from having firearms.

Petaluma police officers were called to the Highway 101 pedestrian overpass at Stuart Drive after receiving reports that a person had been attacked by a man with a gun and a knife just before 7:30 p.m.

A suspect identified as Jimmy Soriano-Vazquez was found nearby, in the parking lot of the Petaluma library on Fairgrounds Drive.

Police said he refused their commands and a chase ensued, which ended when a taser was used on Soriano-Vazquez, police said in a statement.

Police said that he was not in possession of the handgun when he was arrested but was identified by multiple witnesses as the man who had been responsible for the assault.

A search of the area by a police K-9 unit failed to locate the weapon.

Soriano-Vazquez was determined to be on parole for a previous conviction of assault with a deadly weapon. He was booked at Sonoma County Jail on allegations of a parole violation and obstructing officers.
