Petaluma Under Flood Advisory

Urban and small-stream flooding caused by excessive rainfall is expected, the National Weather Service said.

PETALUMA, CA — Petaluma was among a swath of the North Bay under a flood advisory Wednesday as a rainstorm continued to drench the region.

At 10:39 a.m., the National Weather Service San Francisco issued a flood advisory stating that urban and small-stream flooding caused by excessive rainfall was expected.

"Some locations that will experience flooding include Petaluma, San Rafael, Novato, Mill Valley, San Anselmo, Larkspur, Corte Madera, Tiburon, Fairfax, Sausalito, Lucas Valley-Marinwood, San Geronimo, Kentfield, Black Point-Green Point, Stinson Beach, Tamalpais-Homestead, Strawberry, Tamalpais-Homestead Valley, Muir Beach and Ross," the weather service said.

"Turn around, don`t drown when encountering flooded roads," the weather service said. "Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Be aware of your surroundings and do not drive on flooded roads. Please report observed flooding to local emergency services or law enforcement and request they pass this information to the National Weather Service when you can do so safely."

The advisory was expected to expire at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday. We'll keep you updated if we hear otherwise.

Earlier Wednesday, emergency management reported roadway flooding, particularly along Mark West Creek. That was around 9:30 a.m., when 1-2 inches of rain had already fallen over much of Sonoma County. At that time, flooding was expected in Santa Rosa, Petaluma, Rohnert Park, Windsor, Healdsburg, Sebastopol, Cotati, Roseland, South Santa Rosa Cdp, Larkfield-Wikiup, Forestville, South Santa Rosa and Graton.

However, flood advisories expired for northern and Central Sonoma County as the storm appeared to move closer to Southern Sonoma County and into Marin County.
