Sonoma County Storm Impacts: School, Road Closures; Power Outages

SONOMA COUNTY, CA — Sonoma County continued to deal with storm-related impacts Tuesday. With a flood watch still in effect, there were several road closures and one school district closed its campuses.

The West Sonoma County Union High School District was closed Tuesday because of storm-related impacts. The district referred to a fallen tree at Analy High School in Sebastopol and flooded roads as some of the issues it was dealing with.

All virtual and in-person classes were closed Tuesday as the district conducted safety inspections at all facilities: Analy High School in Sebastopol, Laguna High School in Forestville and the West Sonoma County Consortium.

At 10 p.m. Monday, Caltrans reported flood-related closures on state Highway 12 from Fremont to Watmaugh roads and on state Highway 121 from just north of state Highway 11/Arnold Drive to Eighth Street. Flooding was also reported early Tuesday morning at Todd Road and Llano Road.

Shortly before 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, a car was submerged in river waters at Wohler Road in the Laguna de Santa Rosa. The California Highway Patrol reported that without help, there was little it could do until the water receded. An ambulance crew was responding to the incident.

In another part of the county, a downed redwood tree was blocking 11495 Sunnyside Ave. near Our Peak Road in Guerneville, CHP reported.

Earlier Tuesday in Healdsburg, a garbage truck got stuck in mud.

Power outages were impacting several hundred PG&E customers Tuesday, including in the Jenner area. At least 200 were affected by an outage that began around 10:55 a.m. and was caused by an emergency issue, according to PG&E. The utility said it expected to restore power by 8 p.m.

That was down from thousands of people impacted by an outage in the Santa Rosa area around 9:22 p.m. Monday as a thunderstorm rolled through, according to the fire department. PG&E maps of the area showed much of it restored as of 10 p.m. Monday but the Sebastopol area showed between 500 and 4,999 customers without power late Monday.

Except for pockets of Sebastopol, power in Sonoma County was mostly restored at the start of the day Tuesday.

There was a 90 percent chance of rain forecast Tuesday for Sonoma County. Forecasters expected scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms to increase Tuesday afternoon and evening.

Localized flooding was possible for areas that experienced heavy rainfall.

A wind advisory was in effect for the Bay Area and Central Coast until 4 p.m.

Through Wednesday morning, a flood watch was also issued for much of the Bay Area, including coastal North Bay, the Point Reyes National Seashore, the North Bay interior mountains, the North Bay interior valleys and the Sonoma coastal range.

According to the NWS, drier conditions will return for mid to late week, with rain returning for the weekend, which appears to be beneficial and not concerning.
