Does Piedmont's 'Gateway' Pillar Need Some Love?
Park commissioners and city officials hope the pillar — marking the split between Grand and Lower Grand avenues — can be made safer from errant drivers.

City park commissioners and Parks Manager Mark Feldkamp are hoping to find ways to protect the historic entrance pillar at the divide between Grand and Lower Grand avenues — and the landscaping around it — from careless drivers, according to an article in The Piedmonter.
Despite new landscaping and restoration work, the pillar is a periodic target for possibly inebriated drivers — an average of three per year. One commissioner labeled it "a drunk-driving trap," according the the article.
Suggestions for protective measures include more lighting and reflective dots.
