Inside B-Dama: Down-Home Japanese Food

B-Dama, the small-plates Japanese restaurant that opened on Piedmont Avenue last year, doesn't offer "the least expensive way to dine, but it is certainly one of the most fun," a restaurant critic for the Contra Costa Times summed up this week.

Is it an izakaya, dishing up skewers and grilled items in rounds, or a shokudo, a casual 1960s-style eatery? The Times reviewer dissects the differences, although many diners will simply enjoy themselves without worrying about labels.

The restaurant actually rated two features: a review on Dec. 24 and a mouthwatering photo essay on Dec. 26 that showcases photographs from the review.

B-Dama won the Piedmont Patch Readers' Choice 2012 award for best sushi earlier this year. And Piedmont Patch offered an early look at the restaurant in "B-Dama Opens with Down-Home Japanese Food," published shortly after its opening in July of 2011.
