Live From the Capitol: CA Reps Tweet the Lockdown
Northern California's elected representatives took to Twitter to tell family, friends and constituents they were safe and to thank Capitol police.
Congresswoman Barbara Lee, D-Oakland, was among the legislators on lockdown today after shots were fired near the U.S. Capitol.
Lee's spokeswoman Carrie Adams said the congresswoman and staff members were sheltering in place at the Rayburn House Office Building where Lee and other legislators have their offices.
Adams said everyone in Lee's office is safe, and a security sweep has been conducted in the Rayburn building.
The shooting occurred around 2:20 p.m. EST, and an alarm went off inside the Rayburn building a short time later alerting occupants of an emergency, Adams said.
News reports have indicated that shots were fired near the Hart Senate Office Building, and that a Capitol officer was injured.
The lockdown was lifted at about 3:10 p.m., Capitol police said. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi tweeted that her office was also in lockdown but did not provide further details.
