Oakland Has Highest Robbery Rate in US, Piedmont Burglaries Spiked in 2012

Oakland counted more robberies per capita in 2012 than any other large city in the United States. It is the second year in a row that Piedmont’s neighbor claimed the unfortunate title of America's Robbery Capital, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

And the Chron reports that 2013 is on track to be even worse than than the 10.9 robberies per 1,000 residents (4,388 total robberies) recorded in 2012. By contrast, Piedmont police reported six robberies to the FBI last year. That’s a decline from seven in the previous year.

But even as Piedmont’s robbery rate holds steady, burglaries have increased. The FBI’s annual Uniform Crime Report released last week shows Piedmont with 134 burglaries in 2012, up from 88 in 2011.
