Police Blotter: Armed Robbery on Grand Avenue, Vehicle vs. Tree

Incidents highlighted in the blotter were recorded in the Piedmont Police Department log from noon on Aug. 5 through noon, Aug. 9. Not all incidents recorded in the log are included here. Information was supplied by the police and does not indicate any convictions.
MONDAY. AUG. 5
Burglary — A thief took a garage door opener from an unlocked vehicle, then used it to open a garage on Oakmont Avenue and steal bicycles.The burglary was reported at 5:17 p.m.
Identity theft — A Monte Avenue resident reported being the victim of identity theft .
TUESDAY, AUG. 6
Traffic hazard — A police officer removed garbage cans from the middle of Jerome Avenue at 3:52 a.m.
Annoyed neighbor — A Magnolia Avenue resident asked to have a car parked in front of their house for a week marked for towing, although police advised the reporting party that the vehicle belonged to someone in the neighborhood. Police were unable to contact the registered owner of the parked car immediately.
WEDNESDAY, AUG. 7
Armed robbery — A victim was robbed at gunpoint near the corner of Grand and Sunnyside avenues shortly before 12:30 a.m. An orange and white messenger bag, a cell phone and cash were taken, police said. The robber was described as a tall, heavyset black male in his 20s wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt closed tightly around his face, dark pants and dark shoes, armed with a black revolver. The robber escaped in a dark blue vehicle driven by a second man, which drove off down Grand toward I-580.
THURSDAY AUG. 8
Injury accident — A vehicle hit a tree near the corner of Moraga Avenue and Maxwelton Road about 1:30 p.m. Police did not specify the extent of injuries. The vehicle was towed.
FRIDAY, AUG. 9
DUI arrest — One person was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after a traffic stop and field sobriety tests near the corner of Maxwelton Road and Abbott Way at 2 a.m. The driver was jailed at the Gleen Dyer Detention Facility in Oakland.
