Police Blotter: Opossum in a Cupboard, Laptop in a Garbage Can

Incidents highlighted in the blotter were recorded in the Piedmont Police Department log from noon on Sept. 23 through noon, Sept. 27. Not all incidents recorded in the log are included here. Information was supplied by the police and does not indicate any convictions.

MONDAY, SEPT. 23

Noisy dogs — Animal control officers responded to separate complaints of dogs barking on Fairview, Blair and Wildwood avenues.

Auto burglary — A woman told police that someone smashed a window of her vehicle while it was parked in front of Grand Lake Ace Hardware, 1221 Grand Ave., between 7 and 7:45 p.m. Her purse was stolen, and about 9 p.m. the victim received a phone call from a woman who said she'd found the purse. The victim asked the caller to bring the purse to the Piedmont Police Department.

Trashed laptop — A Jerome Avenue resident reported finding a Toshiba laptop computer in her garbage can.

TUESDAY, SEPT. 24

Domestic dispute — Police responded to a caller's report of a woman yelling for help on Ronada Avenue about 2:15 p.m. The woman was located about 10 minutes later near Highland and Moraga avenues. She told police she had been involved in a domestic violence incident but did not need medical attention. 

Stolen stroller — In the morning, a Fairview Avenue resident told police a yellow stroller was stolen from her front porch sometime after 10 p.m. the previous night. The purloined stroller was offered for sale on craigslist.com later in the day, the victim reported.

Not pot — A Boulevard Way told police that juveniles were smoking marijuana about 5:30 p.m. outside a home that backs up to her house but faces Sylvan Way. Officers checked and found adult residents of the Sylvan Way home smoking ordinary cigarettes outdoors.

WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 25

Arrest — Piedmont police arrested a person on suspicion of a Health & Safety code violation about 1 a.m. near the corners of Fairmount and Santa Clara avenues in Oakland. (H&S violations are often, but not always, related to illegal drugs.) The arrested person was taken to the Glenn Dyer Detention Facility in Oakland.

Opossum in the kitchen — A patrol officer responded when Lafayette Avenue residents reported a critter in their kitchen just before 5 a.m. but was unable to coax the opossum out of a cupboard. An off-duty animal control officer was called in. She managed to capture the possum and release it outdoors by 6:30 a.m.
