Walnut Creek Rotarians Chime in on Assistance League’s Operation School Bell!
If children do not feel comfortable with their attire, they have difficulty attending to the learning task.
Assistance League® Diablo Valley’s Operation School Bell®- Clothing is a nationally acclaimed, hands-on philanthropic program that has served local communities since 1994. Last year alone, 3,500 students in the community in grades K-12 received new clothes, all of which contributed to improved school attendance, campus citizenship and academic performance.
Since 2006, Assistance League Diablo Valley has enjoyed a Community Partners component, resulting in employee volunteers from local civic organizations, businesses and corporations becoming hands-on involved while contributing financially to its philanthropic programs. On Thursday, August 28, Operation School Bell Community Partners Co-Chairs Cheryl Miller and Jan Homan greeted 11 returning members of the Walnut Creek Rotary to the Assistance League Annex to bag clothing for elementary schoolchildren in the local community.
Patti Gylock, Vice Chair Operation School Bell-Uniforms, presented a synopsis concerning the funding source, Title One, which is designated for low-income communities. This year, 3,000 uniforms will be allocated to 13 elementary schools in Mt. Diablo Unified and Pittsburg Unified School Districts.

In two hours’ time, the Walnut Creek Rotarians filled 150 student-labeled bags, each with one sweatshirt, three white collared polo shirts, two pairs of pants or skorts for girls (upon request), six pairs of socks, and six pairs of underwear. These much-appreciated bundles will be delivered to the designated elementary schools.
