Homeowners' Nightmare: Resident Arrives to Find Burglary in Progress
A suspected burglar was arrested in the East Bay after he fled the scene of a residential burglary and was later caught nearby, police say.

EAST BAY, CA -- A suspected burglar was arrested Friday afternoon in Pleasant Hill after he fled the scene of a residential burglary and then discarded the stolen items nearby, according to police.
At about 3:20 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 24, officers responded to a report of a burglary at a home on Jib Court, police said.
There, officers spoke with a resident who said they had interrupted a burglary at their home. The suspect fled the residence on a bicycle, according to police.

As officers were investigating, a neighbor reported seeing a suspicious person and discarded property on a nearby street, Camelback Place.
There, officers detained a suspect, identified as Robert Nichols, who police say was in possession of stolen property.

Additionally, witnesses confirmed he was the same person who committed the burglary. Officers then arrested Nichols.
Officers learned Nichols had taken property from multiple thefts, and were able to return the items to the victims, according to police.
